Who has the better Games: Zynga or PopCap?
We already talked a lot about Zynga in the last few months. As you may know already – maybe from this previous post or this one – Zynga is more or less unbeatable in the Social Gaming sector. But as Garth Chouteau, Vice President or PR at PopCap Games, believes, all the other companies take a different approach to gaming than PopCap. As he states, PopCap focusses on “short, social iterations of our classic casual games…” According to Chouteau, their games never get boring due to the fact that PopCap always improves them in the long run. Which somehow implies that other companies don’t do that in his opinion. Well, let’s take a look at the statistics, Mr. Chouteau.
On Facebook, Zynga own the first 5 ranks of Monthly Active Users with CityVille, FarmVille, Texas Hold’Em Poker, FrontierVille and Mafia Wars. All in all 7 games from Zynga appear in the Top 10 games ranking based on MAU’s.
And if we take a look at the DAU’s (Daily Active Users) Zynga owns 4 out of 5 games in the Top 5. Rank 5 however is a PopCap product – Bejeweled Blitz.
Of course most people will agree, that is might not be the most honest and user-friendly strategy to always make the same game over and over again, only with a different setting (like Zynga does). But as long as the statistics don’t give you a reason to change your strategy, why would you? So we can expect some more “similar” games from Zynga and other developers, and most certainly at least the Zynga games will appear on the higher ranks of the Facebook statistics.
